All About Abatement
Visual Branding, Web Design, Print Production
During my time at William Joseph Communications, I had the opportunity to contribute to a rebranding project of an Edmonton-based company in need of a fresh new image and personality.
The clients were so happy with their brand new look they wanted to share it with as many people as possible, including purchasing a food truck to drive around the city and promote their business.

Syphay Restaurant and the Sayaphet family have been long-time clients of mine. They had first reached out to me to help them with marketing their new Downtown Edmonton location 7 years ago. They were one of my first freelance clients.
This project holds a special place in my heart because their family business grew along side my growth as a designer. As marketing and technology trends changed, so too did their needs as a business and I had consulted them on new strategies and solution on how to best use creativity and technology to improve their bottom line.
With more of an online presence and ability for clients to leave feedback, Syphay has been a top-rated Thai Restaurant on TripAdvisor and has won the coveted Golden Fork Award from Vue Weekly newspaper (when it was still around) for multiple years. During the pandemic, Syphay was able to turn a profit during the pandemic from takeout and deliveries.
Residents are invited to share their thoughts about responsible dog ownership as part of the County’s examination of its current Dog Control Bylaw (85-2006), which has been in place since 2006. There are currently over 13,000 dogs licensed in Strathcona County.
Beginning November 21, both dog owners and non-dog owners are encouraged to provide feedback on responsible dog ownership via a short survey or by calling 780-464-8092. The survey is open until December 11, 2016. Topics for comment include dog licensing, enforcement, over-limit permits and addressing nuisance and/or aggressive dog concerns.
A ‘What We Heard’ summary report of survey responses will be shared with Council and the public in early 2017. This summary report will be used as a basis for deeper discussion at three public workshops in early 2017 about what is currently working and where improvements can be made in ensuring responsible dog ownership. Details on the workshop location and dates will be shared in the New Year.
Input received through the survey and public workshops will form the foundation of a final report, scheduled for Council presentation in March, 2017.
Nearly 2,000 residents shared their opinion about responsible dog ownership this past December via a survey, as part of the County’s review of its current Dog Control Bylaw (85-2006).
The survey explored a number of topics, including dog licensing, enforcement, over-limit permits as well as encouraging respondents to share their descriptions of nuisance and/or aggressive dog concerns. A summary of the survey responses will be available shortly.
Based on feedback received to date, residents (both dog owners and non-dog owners) are invited to attend one of the following four interactive workshops for further discussion about responsible dog ownership:
February 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at Broadmoor Golf Course
(2100 Oak Street, Sherwood Park)
February 7, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Moyer Recreation Centre (54569 Range Road 214, Josephburg)
February 9, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church (298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park)
February 15, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at South Cooking Lake Senior Citizens’ Activity Centre (102, 22106 South Cooking Lake Road)
Public input received through the survey and workshops will form the foundation of a final report, scheduled for Council presentation in late spring, 2017.
There are currently 13,000 dogs licensed in Strathcona County. As a reminder, annual dog licence renewal fees are due by March 31, 2017. Changes to the bylaw, if any, will not come into effect until 2018.
Set in the centre of Alberta’s energy and agricultural heartland, Strathcona County is a thriving, successful and vibrant community of almost 96,000 residents. Strathcona County is made up of the urban area of Sherwood Park and a large adjacent rural area of farms, acreages and smaller hamlets. It is home to 75 per cent of refining in Western Canada. With a focus on economic, governance, social, cultural and environmental sustainability, Strathcona County is committed to balancing the unique needs of its diverse community.
The Chew On This postcard received an honourable mention for its attention-getting headline and administrative savings. The Chew On This tagline was created and featured on postcards handed out to residents throughout the community to promote awareness of the dog control bylaw review and encourage survey completion. The postcards featured either a stick of gum (for non-dog owners) or a mini dog treat (for dog-owners) on the reverse of the postcard to play upon the Chew on This theme. Instead of a traditional letter, the County sent postcards to registered dog owners, resulting in nearly $4,000 worth of savings. In less than one month, 2,306 surveys were completed, marking an unprecedented response to a municipal bylaw review.

Visual Branding
The NAIT Civil Engineering Technology Student Club was in need of a new logo and held an open contest for logo submissions. While I was completing my studies at NAIT in Visual Communications, I saw this as the perfect chance for me to apply what I learned.
My logo was chosen as the winning submission and below is final logo presented to the client.
